The medical procedure involved in the fitting of a surgical Gastric Band (GB) is relatively safe and reasonably pain free, especially when it is undertaken using Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. Candidates can normally expect to achieve a steady ongoing weight loss until they reach their target weight, as agreed with their surgeon.

The (GB) is unfortunately not an option that is suitable for everyone: because of the surgical procedure involved, its use is generally limited to those people with a considerable amount of weight to lose and a resulting high BMI. Other factors that have deterred some potential candidates include the relatively high costs of the procedure, fears regarding hospitalisation, such as the possible risk of MRSA infection, the developing of DVT and concerns relating to having a general anaesthetic. Additionally, of course, it must be appreciated that the (GB) does not offer a miracle solution; it will only assist in the achievement of weight reduction if a number of lifestyle changes are permanently adopted.
